I came here for my anniversary with my fiance and it did not disappoint! Easily one of the best meals I've ever had, and the wait staff was so nice, prompt, and professional. Definitely a chic vibe and a great experience for twenty somethings looking to splurge
Ambiance: 3/5 Food: 5/5 This was only my second time at an omakase, with my first experience being more traditional. My visit to Robin as an experimental omakase, and it was quite refreshing. The courses were varied and not repetitive, which made for an exciting experience. Robin allows you to choose your own pricing, and we opted for the highest available option. I left feeling very satisfied and full. While some courses, like the corn soup, felt a bit like filler, they were still enjoyable. We had several servings of uni, which were extremely fresh and served at the perfect temperature. However, some combinations, such as wagyu topped with uni, didn't quite work for me. The uni's strong flavor overpowered the delicate taste of the wagyu, which seemed like a waste. I appreciated the attention to detail in the plating, with each course presented beautifully. On the downside, the interior of the restaurant could use some improvement. Overall, it was a great experience and a memorable departure from the more traditional omakase.
Very fun plates, a solid meal with some creative recipes. Ingredients are fresh and delightfully combined. It felt like a nice living room with comfy chairs. You are not too close to other tables and it's pretty quiet even though it's a small space.
Robin was my first introduction to omakase, and I'm so glad it started me off right. I'm not into sushi, but I'd recommend Robin to anyone. The DJ really set the vibe with throwback R&B and rap, adding to the cool atmosphere. Unfortunately, I don't remember exactly what we had for each course, but I do recall how fresh the ingredients were and how well the distinct flavors melded together with each bite. Our waiter checked on us a good amount without overdoing it. Order a bottle of sake and you've got yourself a fabulous night at Robin, guaranteed!
Robin presents itself as a contemporary omakase. The place in Hayes Valley has a trendy vibe with modern background music. If you're expecting a traditional Japanese omakase, you might be surprised. It's a Japanese-Californian fusion cuisine. Some fish are from Japan, but many are from Canada, New Zealand, or California. I chose the $160 menu. 20 dishes were served. The person next to me chose the $109 menu, and for $50 more, I got the same menu with 3 additional nigiri. Menu (end-April 2024): 1. hirame (halibut) crudo with pineapple // 2. shima-aji // 3. nijimasu (steelhead trout) with apricot // 4. ume madai // 5. canadian gindara // 6. nori chip wagyu and Santa Barbara uni // 7. sawara (spanish mackerel) // 8. New Zealand king salmon // 9. akami bluefin tuna with a5 wagyu beef sauce // 10. potato chip with caviar // 11. canadian albacore salad with papaya // 12. black sea bream // 13. kinmedai // 14. toro // 15. kanpachi // 16. honzuke (bluefin tuna) // 17. noodle with sesame, shaved truffle and japanese chimichurri // 18. kabocha soup, pumpkin seeds // 19. a5 wagyu with foie gras // 20. coconut ice cream with caramel banana puree and chocolate chips Halibut crudo in a Japanese restaurant is a bit unexpected. The same goes for the Canadian albacore salad. I actually don't see the point of serving albacore in a high-end omakase. In the nigiri, several toppings overpower the taste of the sushi, like the kumquat and apricot toppings. They should use much smaller amounts of topping. The nori with uni was disappointing; the wagyu flavor was completely missing. I also don't see the point of the potato nigiri with caviar. There was a nice selection of nigiri, and many were very good, like the shima-aji, gindara, kinmedai and the wagyu with foie gras nigiri. The Spanish mackerel dish was also very good. The kabocha soup didn't fit with the rest of the meal and the portion was too large. The chef himself said it was to make sure customers are filled by the end of the meal. The final dessert was good, but it was a bit disappointing to have a typically Californian dessert at the end of the meal. The service was very good and it was nice to talk with the sushi chef.
Made a reservation here for a birthday dinner and had a good experience. Almost walked past the restaurant because there isn't visible signage outside - a little bit of a hidden spot. They open right at 5pm and no one is let into the restaurant prior to that. The food is where Robin shines. We decided on the top $209 tier to get to try everything, and each course that came out was so delicious and fresh. The top price got us 24 courses, which is great for the variety and made me very full by the end. I personally love "modern" sushi, so I loved the toppings, the torching, and the delicious sauces some of the dishes came with. Some of my favorite dishes of the night include: - Tuna with wagyu fat on top: I could drink the wagyu fat. Wow. Amazing flavor. - Torched salmon with truffle butter: So tender and fatty and very much melt in your mouth. Delicious! - Albacore with Thai papaya salad: Reminded me of Thai curry because of the nutty sauce on top. - Dessert soft serve: So so creamy, I think made with coconut milk? Might be some of the best soft serve I've ever had, and came with this delicious banana sauce at the bottom. It was cute because it came with a candle for my partner's birthday. Everything about the restaurant is modern and hip - the food, the plates, the interior, the music. Pretty cool designs all around. It's a bit of a louder experience, quite chatty and with light rap music in the background. I do wish the music had been slightly quieter so I could hear the chef better as he introduced the dishes. I didn't hear clearly what I was eating for some of the courses, so a menu of some sorts would've been a great addition. Would recommend for a fancy date night or special occasion dinner.
I booked the 5:30pm reservation at the sushi bar 2 days before. We did the top menu ($209) without any add ons at the end (we were pretty full after 20 pieces of nirigi & a few small dishes). I would say this is very worth it. We got lots of different fish, all of which were tasty. The service was exceptional & we made great conversation with our sushi chef Tai. We requested on the Resy booking if we could get a menu (since we like to follow along & keep these as a souvenir. Although it is a menu-less restaurant with the "decide how much you want to pay when you get there" type of menu, they hand wrote a menu for us to take home! Ambiance is like a normal fine dining type restaurant - low lighting & got darker as the night went on. But never too dark & lights were placed well that my plate of food was always well lit!
Came here 5 years ago and I think it was amazing both times! Truly my favorite omakase place in the city. The vibes, service, and sushi is unmatchable We celebrated our 4 year anni and had the honor of having chef Peter. We chose the $150 omakase set and had a 20 course meal. The uni, noodles, and wagyu with foi gras was my favorite!
